The College of Health Sciences (CHS) on 10th May 2024, awarded GH¢108,000 to nine early-career researchers through its grant award scheme. Each recipient received GH¢12,000 to support their research projects, which are to be completed within 12 months. The scheme, initiated by the Office of the Provost, aims to help researchers practice for larger grant applications.

The awardees included Mr. James Nketia from the Department of Anatomy, Ms. Doris Hagan from the Department of Public Health Nursing, Mrs. Catherine Kroamah Dwumfour from the Nursing Department, Ms. Ajaratu Lampinley from the Nursing Department, Mr. Collins Atta Poku from the Nursing Department, Mr. Jacob Apibilla Ayembilla from the Department of Molecular Medicine, Mr. Lawrence Michael Obeng from the Department of Pharmaceutics, Mr. Odoi Hayford from the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and Dr. (Mrs.) Akua Afriyie Ocran from the Department of Child Health.

Professor Christian Agyare, the Provost of CHS, congratulated the awardees urging them to complete their projects within the expected period. He assured them of the necessary resources and encouraged them to use this opportunity to secure larger grants in the future. He highlighted the increase in award amounts from GH¢10,000 to GH¢12,000 per recipient and hoped for further increases in the future. He also mentioned that the awardees are expected to produce a publication acknowledging the College’s contribution.

During the meeting at the CHS Boardroom, Prof. Peter Donkor, the College of Health Sciences Research Grant Committee Chairman, emphasized the responsibility of the awardees to complete their projects on time and ethically. He advised them to track their milestones and consider publishing their work. He also urged them to be aware of the rules regarding the expenditure of university funds, the expected reporting periods, whiles ensuring that the right procedures are followed when dealing with personnel and the use of resources.
