ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

  • History of the School / Faculty

Epidemiology and Biostatistics are essential to achieving the goals of Public Health. These disciplines housed together in a department would be synergistic to education, research and service aimed at improving the health of populations.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is one of the foundational departments of the School of Public Health when it was established in the year 2014. In the year 2019, the department introduced its flagship Master of Philosophy in Field Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MPhil FEAB) program.

The Department is currently headed by Prof. Emmanuel K. Nakua. Other Faculty include Dr. Yeetey Enuameh, Dr. Arti Singh, Dr. Aliyu Mohammed, Dr. Daniel Boateng. Miss Georgina Dwomor is the Administrative Secretary of the Department. 

Objectives, Mission/Vision

  • Vision – To be a Center of Excellence in the Public Health Sciences of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Ghana and beyond.
  • Mission – To advance the knowledge and application of the Public Health Sciences of Epidemiology and Biostatistics through quality education, research, and community service in synchrony with appropriate technologies to improve the health of populations globally.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED:

Master of Philosophy in Field Epidemiology and Applied Biostatistics (Postgraduate)

Entry Requirement for each programme

  • Applicants should have a good first degree (at least a 2nd class upper division) from a recognized tertiary institution
  • Applicants should have studied any of the natural sciences such as Biology, Allied Health Sciences, Medical Sciences, Biostatistics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or any Public Health-related fields.
  • Applicants with a Master of Public Health or of other public health disciplines can apply.
  • A demonstration of quantitative analytical skills and a minimum of two years post-graduation experience would be of added advantage.
  • Finally, a written examination and an interview would serve to select eligible candidates for the program.

Graduation Requirements

  • Shall be in accordance with the KNUST’s requirements as contained in the University Statutes and the Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Student must have obtained a maximum of 63 credit hours.
  • Students must submit and successful defend a written dissertation.
  • Students must have a Cumulated Weighted Average (CWA) of 55 or above.

Career Prospects

  • A broad spectrum of opportunities for graduates to be employed and/or establish themselves as entrepreneurs at all levels of the health system and within the health market.
  • Graduates can hold positions such as health managers, researchers, experts and consultants, data generation and management specialists; health planners; policy analysis, evaluation of health programmes and technologies; entrepreneurship; communication skills in presentation and writing, lobbying, and advocacy.
  • The demand for these competencies and skills cuts across:
